Choibalsan is the fourth biggest city in Mongolia. The name of the city was Bayan Tümen until 1941, when it was renamed after the communist leader Khorloogiin Choibalsan. It is the capital of the aimag of Dornod and city administrative cnter official name is Kherlen sum with area of 281 km2. It is located at the Kherlen River, at an elevation of 747 m above sea. The city was a post on a trading route for centuries. In the 19th century it developed into a city, and became the economic center of eastern Mongolia in the twentieth century. After democratization in 1992, when the Russian workers left, large parts of the economy collapsed. After that the city has suffered from one of the highest unemployment rates in Mongolia.

The road length between Ulan Bator and Erdenet is about 230 miles (371 km). The estimated population of the city was around 4100 in 1975, 31900 in 1979, 38700 in 1981, 45,400 in 1985, 56100 in 1989 and 86,866 in 2008.

Darkhan is the second biggest city in Mongolia and the capital of Darkhan-Uul Aimag. The estimated population of the city is around 74,300 in 2007. The city was established with wide-ranging economic assistance from the Soviet Union. The city was basically conceived to be a manufacturing center for Mongolia’s northern territory. The city is mainly an industrial region and contains 82% of the aimag’s population. As with most urban Mongols, some 86% of the city’s population resides in residential apartments, with the remaining population living in yurts on the surroundings of the city. The city is close to Russia and retains a fairly large percentage of native Russians.
