The Segou area is characterized as semi-arid climate with median rain fall of around 513 mm and irrigated by two vital waterways: the Niger and the Bani River, allowing irrigation for agriculture. The city has two seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season starts in June and lasts about four months until September. The dry season includes a cold period and a period of heat. The median annual precipitation is about 513 mm. The city has dominant wind in the dry season and it blows from north to south. The monsoon blowing from south to north-west is more frequent during rainy season.

Mopti got its name from the Fulfulde word for gathering. The islands had long been inhabited, but Mopti was only established in the nineteenth century as part of the Massina Empire, later becoming the base of El Hadj Umar Tall. Because of limited land available, Mopti is very densely developed compared to most Malian cities, containing many multi-story buildings and narrow streets. Originally, the islands were much smaller than they are today; first connected by dykes in the early twentieth century, the regions around and between natural islands have been slowly filled and raised, often by deposition of household trash, a process that still continues today in areas such as the western edge of the Old Town.
