Tobruk or Tubruq is a city, seaport, and peninsula on Libya’s eastern Mediterranean shore close to the border with Egypt. It is the capital of Al Butnan District previously called Tobruk District. The estimated population of the city was around 300,000. The city was the located of a colony of ancient Greeks, and, later, of a Roman fortress guarding the frontier of Cyrenaica. For a very long time the city also served as a way station along the shore caravan route. By 1911, an Italian military post was established in the city, but during World War II, in 1941, the Australian 9th Division took over the city and prolonged fighting against German forces followed. Rebuilt after World War II, Tobruk was later extended during the 1960s to include a harbor terminal connected by an oil pipeline to the Sarir oil field.

Mayor and town council in Gharyan was established in 1884. The city played a vital role during the resistance against the Italian invasion in the early 20th century.  Zaouia is also spelled as zawiya, zawiyah, zaouiya, zaouia zwaya, etc, these are Maghrebi and West African term for an Islamic religious school or monastery, generally equivalent to the Eastern term "madrassa". The zawiya often contains a pool, and sometimes a fountain. In earlier times these were the main sources for education in the region, and taught fundamental literacy to a huge proportion of children even in quite remote hilly areas. These institutions rose up to a 40% literacy rate in Algeria in 1830, which is supposedly higher than after the French left. Their studies starts by memorizing the Arabic alphabet and the later, shorter suras of the Qur’an; if a student was adequately interested or apt, he can take admission in law (fiqh), theology, Arabic grammar, mathematics, and sometimes astronomy. These are still operational throughout the Maghreb, and continue to be a major educational resource in the Sahel of West Africa, from Mauritania to Nigeria.

Libya, officially the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, is a country to be found in North Africa. With an area of approximately 1,800,000 square kilometers, 90% of which is desert, Libya is the fourth biggest country in Africa by area, and the 17th biggest in the world. The capital, Tripoli, is home to 1.7 million of Libya’s 5.7 million citizens. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica. At 1,770 kilometers, Libya’s shoreline is the greatest of any African country bordering the Mediterranean. The part of the Mediterranean Sea north of Libya is often called the Libyan Sea. Natural hazards come in the form of hot, dry, dust-laden sirocco. The Libyan financial system depends mainly upon revenues from the oil sector, which comprise nearly all export earnings and about one-quarter of gross domestic product. Climatic conditions and poor soils brutally bound agricultural output, and Libya imports about 75% of its food. Water is also a trouble, with some 28% of the inhabitants not having access to safe drinking water in 2000.
