Zliten or Zlitan is a town located in the Misratah District of Libya. It is situated on the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea west of the Gulf of Sidra. The city was the capital of the earlier Zlitan District. The estimated population of the city was around 39,950 in 1984 and it had an estimated population of 110,000 inhabitants in 2009. The economy of the city is based on number of modern banking institutions, shopping center and the Zliten Hotel. This hotel is the city’s top accommodation for tourists. In the start of this century the Government announced joint ventures for number of state development projects in the city. These projects included Arab Cement Company’s (ACC) cement plant in Zliten with an investment of $169 million.
The name Zliten is the name both for town and the whole area. The town of Zliten is located 160 km Eastern side of the capital, Tripoli, and about 35 km Eastern side of the old Roman city of Leptis Magna. It is around 60 km western side of the city of Misurata and 40 km east of Al-Khums. The total area of the city is around 8 sq km. The district of Zliten is widespread and the total area of the district is around 3000 sq. Km. It is bounded by the Mediterranean from the northern side, Misurata from the eastern side, Bani Walid from the southern side and Al-Khums from the western side.
The city contains one of Libya’s most well known Islamic universities, Al-Jamiaa Al-Asmariya. The university includes the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Dentistry and Mouth Surgery, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences and the Faculty of Teachers. They are all under the supervision of Al-Merqib University. There is also a higher vocational training center covering various engineering fields.
