Zarqa is a city in Jordan situated in the northeastern side of Amman. The estimated population of the city was around 440,227, it is the country’s third biggest city after Amman and Irbid. The city is the administrative center of Zarqa Governorate. Its name means "the blue one". The city is the Jordan’s industrial center, home to over 50% of Jordanian factories. The development of the industry in the city is the result of low real estate costs and proximity to the capital, Amman. The city was built as a result of migrants from the Caspian Sea area at the beginning of the twentieth century, at first the city was established on the banks of the Zarqa River, the population increased steadily with the construction of the Hejaz railway by the ottomans. The bases of the Jordanian army, previously known as the Arab Legion, were located in Zarqa.
The initial settlement in the city was in 1902 by Chechen migrants of the wars between the Ottoman and Russian Empires. These people settled along the Zarqa River. In those times a railway was built in the new settlement, this railway station turned Zarqa into a vital center. In 1905 the government issued a decree that permitted the Chechen migrants to own lands which they settled on. The population then rapidly developed in size. In 1928 the new Jordanian government issued a decree to establish the first municipal council for Zarqa.
The city is divided into five districts that all together have a region of around 60 km2, and another two districts within the radius of influence of the city. These districts are First District (City center), Second District (Althawra Al-Arabiya), Third District (Ewajan), Forth District (Zawahreh), Fifth District (New Zarqa), Sports Complex District and Zarqa City Gardens District. A new railway will be constructed to link Amman with Az-Zarqa. The project is now being developed by a Spanish engineering company and will be paid with Kuwaiti funds.
