Zaouia is also spelled as zawiya, zawiyah, zaouiya, zaouia zwaya, etc, these are Maghrebi and West African term for an Islamic religious school or monastery, generally equivalent to the Eastern term "madrassa". The zawiya often contains a pool, and sometimes a fountain. In earlier times these were the main sources for education in the region, and taught fundamental literacy to a huge proportion of children even in quite remote hilly areas. These institutions rose up to a 40% literacy rate in Algeria in 1830, which is supposedly higher than after the French left. Their studies starts by memorizing the Arabic alphabet and the later, shorter suras of the Qur’an; if a student was adequately interested or apt, he can take admission in law (fiqh), theology, Arabic grammar, mathematics, and sometimes astronomy. These are still operational throughout the Maghreb, and continue to be a major educational resource in the Sahel of West Africa, from Mauritania to Nigeria.

The name of the city also means Sufi lodge, akin to the term khanqah used in the Persian-speaking world. An example is the Hilaliyya Zawiya in Syria. One of the best known living or contemporary Zawiya’s today is situated in Lefke, Cyprus and is part of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order. There are number of extensions or sub-zawiyas associated with this Zawiya located in places around the world.

In the Arabic-speaking populations of Mauritania, Morocco, Mali and Algeria, the city is sometimes refered as Moors/Maure or Sahrawis, this word is also used to signify a certain type of tribe. Sahrawi-Moorish society was conventionally divided in number of tribal castes, with the Hassane warrior tribes ruling and extracting tribute – horma – from the subservient znaga tribes. A core caste was formed by the Zawiya, or scholarly tribes, who offered religious teaching and services to the people of the area. But it doesn’t mean that they maintained a monastery or school as mentioned above, since all these tribes were more or less nomadic. But shaykhs would sometimes create schools, or, after their deaths, their graves would turn into holy places of worth to the tribe.
