The Republic of Zambia is a surrounded by land country in Southern Africa. The neighboring countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the northern side, Tanzania to the north-eastern side, Malawi to the eastern side, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the southern side, and Angola to the western side. The capital city is Lusaka, situated in the southeast of the country. The populace is concentrated mostly around the capital Lusaka in the southern and the Copper belt to the northwestern side.
Zambia has been populated for thousands of years by hunter-gatherers and migrating tribes. After sporadic visits by European explorers starting in the 18th century, Zambia was progressively claimed and engaged by the British as protectorate of Northern Rhodesia towards the end of the nineteenth century.
Zambia is a surrounded by land country in southern Africa, with a hot climate and consists typically of highland, with some hills and mountains, dissected by river valleys. At 752,614 km2, it is the 39th biggest country in the world and to some extent larger than the US state of Texas. Zambia is drained by two main river basins: the Zambezi basin in the south covering about three-quarters of the country; and the Congo basin in the north covering about one-quarter of the country. A very minute area in the north-east forms part of the internal drainage basin of Lake Rukwa in Tanzania.
In the Zambezi basin, there are a numeral main rivers flowing wholly or to some extent through Zambia: the Kabompo, Lungwebungu, Kafue, Luangwa, and the Zambezi itself, which flows through the country in the west and then forms its southern border with Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Its source is in Zambia but it diverts into Angola, and numerals of its tributaries arise in Angola’s central highlands. The edge of the Cuando River floodplain forms Zambia’s south-western border and via the Chobe River that river contributes very small water to the Zambezi because the majority is lost by evaporation.
