Yaounde is the capital of Cameroon and second biggest city in the country after Douala. It is located in the center of the nation at an elevation of about 750 meters (2,500 ft) above sea level. Main industries of the city include tobacco, dairy products, breweries, clay, glass goods, and lumber. It is also a regional distribution center for coffee, cocoa, copra, sugar cane, and rubber. The city is the administrative center containing government offices, some hotels, and the central market. The Bastos neighborhood, with the majority of houses owned by Cameroonians, is home to foreign embassies and the expatriate European community. The presidential palace and compound is in the Etoudi neighborhood.
The places of interest in the city are Cathédrale Notre Dame des Victoires, Basilique Marie-Reine-des-Apôtres, Cameroon Art Museum, Cameroon National Museum, Afhemi Museum and Palais du Sport. The city also contains a small zoo in the Mvog-Betsi neighbourhood. Yaounde has a small assortment of nightclubs and restaurants. The city is served by Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, which is a main civilian hub, while the surrounding areas of Yaounde Airport are used by the military. Railway system of the city connects it with port city of Douala and north to N’Gaoundéré. Several bus companies also operate in the city to connect it to other cities such as Nsam and Mvan neighborhoods. The time of travel between Douala and Yaounde is approximately 3 hours. The city witnesses a heavy traffic during weekdays, but is very light during the weekends. Yaounde has made a great progress in infrastructure especially road construction.
Mokolo is the largest market in the city but the city has several other markets like Mfoundi, Casino etc located in the city center. The national football team plays matches in the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. Also, the Grand Prix Chantal Biya, which is a men’s road bicycle racing event on the UCI Africa Tour starts and finishes in Yaounde.
