Washington, D.C. officially the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, established on July 16, 1790. The metropolitan area of Washington was initially a separate metropolis within the Territory of Columbia till an act of Congress in 1871 effectively combined the City and the Territory into a single body called the District of Columbia. It is for this basis that the city, while officially named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C.
The city is situated on the northern bank of the Potomac River and is surrounded by the states of Virginia to the southwestern side and Maryland to the other sides. The District has a populace of 591,833; because of commuters from the nearby towns, its population increases to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington municipal region, of which the District is a part, has a populace of 5.3 million, the ninth biggest urban area in the country.
The District has emergent industries not related to government, particularly in the areas of education, economics, public policy, and scientific research. George Washington University, Georgetown University, Washington Hospital Center, Howard University, and Fannie Mae are the major five non-government-related employers in the city. There are five Fortune 1000 companies based in Washington, of which two are also Fortune 500 companies.
Washington has a moist subtropical weather, with four diverse seasons. The District is situated in plant hardiness zone a close to city center. Elsewhere in the city, has a moderate weather. Spring and fall are gentle, with low moisture, while winter brings constant cool temperatures and yearly snowfall averaging 16.6 inches. The most violent storms are called “nor’easters”, which normally feature high winds, serious rains, and infrequent snow. These storms often influence big sections of the U.S. East Coast.
