Wakefield is the main county and governmental center of the City of Wakefield, a municipal district of West Yorkshire, England. Situated by the River Calder on the eastern border of the Pen-nines, the metropolitan area of the city is 2,062 hectares and had a populace of 76,886 in 2001. Wakefield was known as "Merrie City" in the Middle era and in fifteenth century it got its fame as a very quick market town having fresh stocks of fish and flesh from sea and by rivers and also containing plenty of coal in the quarters.

The city witnessed a battle during the Wars of the Roses and believed to be a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. In spite of all these setbacks the city developed to become a significant market town and center for wool. It is also a fine inline port due to its position on the River Calder. Wakefield is 9 miles southeast of Leeds and 28 miles southwest of York on the eastern border of the low-rising mountain range of Pennines in the lower Calder Valley. The city center is located on a low hill on the north bank of the River Calder near the crossing place where it is spanned by a 14th-century, nine arched, stone bridge and a reinforced concrete bridge built in 1929–1930. It is at the junction of main north-south routes to Sheffield, Leeds and Don Caster and west-east routes to Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Pontefract.

It is within the region of the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Yorkshire Coalfield and located on coal measures and sandstones of the Carboniferous era. It has the population density of 9.31 inhabitants per square kilometer. Of those aged 16–74 in Wakefield, 39.14% had no educational qualifications, much higher than 28.9% in all of England. The number of theft-from-a-vehicle offences and theft of a vehicle per 1,000 of the population was 7.9 and 3.9 compared to the English national average of 6.3 and 2.3 respectively.
