Venezuela officially called Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a hot country on the northern shore of South America. It is a continental mainland with many islands situated off its shoreline in the Caribbean Sea. The republic won its independence from Spain in 1821. Venezuela boundaries Guyana to the east of the Essequibo river, Brazil to the south, and Colombia to the west. Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, Barbados, Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Leeward Antilles lie just north, off the Venezuelan shore. Its size is 916,445 km² with an estimated populace of 26,414,816. Its capital is Caracas. The colors of the Venezuelan flag are yellow, blue and red, in that order: the yellow stands for land prosperity, the blue for bravery, and the red for independence from Spain.
Venezuela holds territorial disputes with Guyana, mainly about the Essequibo area, and with Colombia relating to the Gulf of Venezuela. In 1895, after the dispute over the Essequibo river boundary flared up, it was submitted to a impartial commission, which in 1899 decided generally against Venezuela’s claim. Venezuela is recognized extensively for its petroleum industry, the environmental multiplicity of its territory, and its natural features. Venezuela is considered to be among the world’s 18 most biodiversity countries, featuring various wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
Venezuela is amongst the majority urbanized countries in Latin America; the enormous mass of Venezuelans lives in the cities of the north, especially in the capital Caracas which is also the biggest city. Other main cities include Maracaibo, Valencia, Maracay, Barquisimeto, Merida, Barcelona-Puerto La Cruz and Ciudad Guayana.
Though Venezuela is totally located in the tropics, its weather varies from moist low altitude plains, where average yearly temperatures range as high as 28 °C, to glaciers and high ground with an average annual temperature of 8 °C. Annual precipitation varies between 430 millimeters in the semiarid portions of the northwest to 1,000 millimeters in the Orinoco Delta of the Far East.
