United Arab Emirates is situated on the southeastern side of the Arabian Peninsula. It consists of seven emirates, which are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Al Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. It is surrounded by the Persian Gulf to the northern side, Omanto the eastern side, Saudi Arabia to the western and southern side as well as Qatar to the northwestern side. The country is a hostile desert while the Trucial shoreline can be described as shallow seas, reefs, sandbars and islets. To the western side the salt flats or Sabkha extend southward for 112 km. UAE’s capital is Abu Dhabi.


The months between May and October are enormously warm, having shade temperatures of between 38° and 49° C and a very high moisture near the shore. Winter temperatures can be as low as 2° C but average between 17° and 20° C. yearly rainfall is from 5 to 10 cm. The precipitation is significantly more in the mountains with the majority of the precipitation between November and February.

The UAE has an open financial system with a considerable yearly trade surplus. GDP is directly based on oil and gas production. UAE has undergone a transformation from an insolvent region of minute desert to a contemporary state with a high standard of living. The government has improved spending on job formation and infrastructure expansion and is opening up utilities to greater private sector involvement. The country’s Free Trade Zone offers 100% foreign ownership and no taxes. These zones are helping to attract foreign investors. The oil revenue, strong liquidity, housing shortages, and cheap credit in 2005-07 led to a surge in asset prices and consumer inflation. Main industries are Aluminum Smelting, Cement, Fish Processing, Fish Meal, Natural Gas Liquefaction, Oil Production and Steel Milling. The city of Dubai presents some of the most stimulating adventures such as the desert safaris. There is a very well-known place in UAE called the Big Red because of the incredible red color of the Dune.

The official religion is Islam with 80% of the population Sunni Muslims while Christians are less than 4% of the population. The official language is Arabic while English is widely used for business and governmental purposes. Rice, meat, and fish are the famous foods of UAE. Most commonly used spices are coriander, cardamom, saffron, and turmeric. A favorite dish in the UAE is machbous, rice and meat seasoned with spices, onions, tomatoes, and dried lemon. During Ramadan, the month of daytime fasting, harees is usually served at night.
