The Republic of Uganda is surrounded by land country in East Africa. It is bounded on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a considerable segment of Lake Victoria, which is also surrounded by Kenya and Tanzania.
Uganda is named from the Buganda kingdom, which encompassed a section of the south of the country including the capital Kampala. Half of the population of the country lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. The country is situated on the East African highland, averaging about 1100 meters above sea level, and this slopes very gradually downwards to the Sudanese Plain to the north. The Victoria Nile drains from the lake into Lake Kyoga and thence into Lake Albert on the Congolese border. It then goes north into Sudan. One little area on the eastern edge of Uganda is drained by the Turkwel river, part of the internal drainage basin of Lake Turkana.
Although landlocked, Uganda contains a lot of large lakes, besides Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, there are Lake Albert, Lake Edward and the smaller Lake George. Uganda’s economy suffered from overwhelming economic policies and volatility, making Uganda as one of the world’s poorest countries. The country has commenced economic reforms and expansion has been robust.
Uganda natural resources include fertile soils, regular rainfall, and sizable mineral deposits of copper and cobalt. The country has largely unused reserves of both crude oil and natural gas. Agriculture is the most significant segment of the economy, employing over 80% of the work force, with coffee accounting for the bulk of export revenues. The locally spoken language in Uganda is Luganda spoken mainly in the urban concentrations of Kampala, the capital city, and in towns and localities in the Buganda area of Uganda which encompasses Kampala. The Lusoga and Runyankore languages follow, spoken mainly in the southeastern and southwestern parts of Uganda correspondingly.
