Tucson is a city in and the administrative Center of Pima County, Arizona, United States, situated 118 miles southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico boundary. Estimated population of the city is around 541,811, with a metropolitan area population at 1,023,320 (2008). Tucson ranked as the 32nd biggest city and 52nd biggest metropolitan region in the United States. It is the biggest city in southern Arizona and the second biggest in the state. Tucson is home to the University of Arizona.
The city has four major mountain ranges, one to the north called the Santa Catalina Mountains, to the east are the Rincon Mountains, south the Santa Rita Mountains will be found, and west are the Tucson Mountains. The altitude of the city is around 9,453 feet above sea level, surpassing Mount Lemmon by about 300 feet. The name of the city derived from the Spanish name of the city, Tucson meaning "(at the) base of the black Hill", a reference to a nearby volcanic mountain. Tucson is sometimes called "The Old Pueblo".
Tucson has a total area of 195.1 square miles, of which 194.7 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water. The altitude of the city is around 2,389 ft (728 m) above sea level. Tucson is located on an alluvial plain in the Sonoran desert, bounded by five small ranges of mountains: the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Tortolita Mountains to the northern side, the Santa Rita Mountains to the southern side, the Rincon Mountains to the eastern side, and the Tucson Mountains to the western side. The high point of the Santa Catalina Mountains is 9,157-foot Mount Lemmon, the southernmost ski destination in the continental U.S., while the Tucson Mountains include 4,687-foot Wasson Peak. The highest point in the area is Mount Wrightson, established in the Santa Rita Mountains at 9,453 feet above sea level.
