Tshikapa is a city located in the Kasai Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is situated about 40 miles northern side of the Angolan boundary and 120 miles western side of province capital Kananga at the convergence point of convergence of the Tshikapa and Kasai rivers. The estimated population of the city was about 38,900 in 1970 while the estimated population of the city was about 180,900 in 1994. However during the recent Congo wars great flux in population rendering made the current figures unreliable. Tshikapa has been a site of diamond mining since its founding in the early twentieth century. The city was established by Forminere, an American/Belgian mining consortium which discovered diamonds close the city in early 1900′s. The city has the second densest source of satellite phone communications in the world after post-war Iraq. This is all due to the exploitation of the diamond mines.
The economy of the city has declined drastically since the mid-1980s. it was a great industrial city in the area, the city has boasted a thriving mining sector and it’s agriculture sector was relatively productive. The two recent clashes which began in 1996, have dramatically decreased the national output and government revenue, have increased outside debt, and have resulted in deaths of a lots of people during the war, and associated famine and disease. Malnutrition affects approximately two thirds of the country’s population.
Foreign businesses closed their operations because of the uncertainty about the outcome of the clash, lack of infrastructure, and the hard operating environment. The war has increased the impact of such basic troubles as an uncertain legal framework, corruption, inflation, and lack of openness in government economic policy and financial operations.
