Toulouse is a city in southwest France on the banks of the River Garonne, 590 km away from Paris and in the middle of Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Estimated population of the city is around 1,102,882 inhabitants (2006), the Toulouse metropolitan area is the sixth biggest in France after Paris, Lyons, Marseilles, Lille and Nice. The major industries of the city are aeronautics, space, electronics, information technology and biotechnology. It contains the Airbus headquarters and assembly-lines of Airbus A320, A330, A340, and A380. Toulouse has a moderate climate, usually classified as oceanic under the Koppen climate classification, falling just short of a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) classification. Toulouse is situated at the junction with the Mediterranean climate zone, but uniform precipitation prevents it from being classified this way.

Toulouse is the fourth biggest city in France, after Paris, Marseilles and Lyons, and the fifth biggest metropolitan area after Paris, Lyons, Marseilles and Lille. The back bone of the city’s economy is the aerospace and high-tech industries; the growth in the population is 1.5% in 1990 and 1.98% a year in the 2000. Boasting the highest population growth of any French metropolitan area larger than 500,000 residents, Toulouse is on its way to overtake Lille as the fourth biggest metropolitan area of France.

The University of Toulouse is located in this city. It was established in 1229. Now it is divided into three separate universities. As the universities in Oxford and Paris, the University of Toulouse was established at the time when Europeans were really interested in the translation of the books and research material of Arabs of Andalus and Greek philosophers. These writings challenged European ideology inspiring scientific discoveries and advances in the arts – as society began seeing itself in a new way. These colleges were supported by the Church in hopes to reconcile Greek Philosophy and Christian Theology.
