Toliara is also known as Toliary.it was previously called Tuléar. It is the main city in Madagascar. The city is also the capital city of Atsimo-Andrefana areaand the Toliara province. The present spelling of the city name was adopted in the 1970s, and represents the orthography of the Malagasy language. Several geographic place names were similarly altered in this time from their previous French spellings following Malagasy independence in 1960. The estimated population of the city was around 101,661 (2001 census). The city is main import/export center of the commodities such as sisal, soap, hemp, cotton, rice, and peanuts. Air Madagascar operates scheduled flights to here.

In the eastern direction, a steep escarpment leads from the central highlands down into a ribbon of rain forest with a narrow coastal further east. The Canal des Pangalanes is a chain of natural and man-made lakes connected by canals that runs parallel to the east coast for some 460 km (286 mi) (about two-thirds of the island). The descent from the central moorland toward the west is more regular, with remnants of deciduous forest and savanna-like plains (which in the south and southwest, are fairly dry and host spiky desert and baobabs). On the west coast are many protected harbors, but silting is a major problem caused by sediment from the high levels of erosion inland.

Along the top of this ridge exists the central highlands, a plateau region ranging in elevation from 2,450 to 4,400 ft above sea level. The central highlands are characterized by terraced, rice-growing valleys lying between barren hills. Here, the red shaded soil that covers much of the island has been exposed by erosion, showing clearly why the country is often referred to as the "Red Island".
