Toamasina is also known as Tamatave. It is a main city in the central region of Madagascar. The city is the capital of the Atsinanana area and of the Toamasina Province. The city is the main port of Madagascar which is located close to the center of the eastern shore at 18 10 S, 49 32 E. the estimated population of the city was around 179,045 (2001 census).

The city is very significant due to the existence of a coral reef, which forms a spacious and fairly commodious port, entered by two openings. The city is established on a sandy peninsula which projects at right angles from the main shoreline. This portion of the city is crowded by considerable number of houses, with good shops and merchants offices in the main thoroughfares.

The harbor of the city is served as Madagascar’s most significant gateway to the Indian Ocean and to the world. The city has a broad palm tree lined avenues and selection of hotels and restaurants. The beaches in this area are beautiful, although sharks and pollution prevent swimming. The main market of the city is Bazary Be. Here you can buy everything from exotic spices to handicrafts. The central market in the heart of the city is one of the most popular sites in the city. The city contains the University of Toamasina, which is part of Madagascar’s public university system. It is also the sea city of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toamasina.
