Thunder Bay is formerly known as the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur is a metropolitan city and the government center of Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. It is the most heavily populated city in Northwestern Ontario, and the second most densely inhabited in Northern Ontario after Greater Sudbury. The metropolitan region of Thunder Bay city has a populace of about 122,907, and contains the city of Thunder Bay, Oliver Paipoonge and Neebing, the big towns of Shuniah, Conmee, O’Connor and Gillies and the Fort William First Nation.
European immigration in the area was started in the late 1600s with the start of French trading on the banks of the Kaministiquia River. The city was established in 1970 by the joining of cities of Fort William, Port Arthur and the towns of Neebing and McIntyre. Its port makes a significant contribution in the shipping of grain and other products from western Canada from the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway to the eastern shore. Forestry and manufacturing were the basic foundations of the economy of this city, but with their decrease in current years the city has transformed its economy to knowledge economy based on medical research and education. That is why the Thunder Bay being the location of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.
The city given this name, because of the immense bay at the head of Lake Superior, called Baie du Tonnerre. The city is also known as the Lake head or Canadian Lake head because of its place at the end of Great Lakes navigation. The city has an area of 328.48 square kilometers which includes the former cities of Fort William and Port Arthur as well as the townships of Neebing, Ontario and McIntyre. The central business districts of Fort William and Port Arthur have undergone a severe decline as business and government have relocated to the Inter-city area since 1970. There has also been considerable residential development in adjacent areas of the former Neebing and McIntyre townships.
