Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan and also of the Tashkent Province. The formally registered populace of the city in 2008 was 2.18 million. The local time in Tashkent is UTC/GMT +5 hours. Tashkent has a semi dry continental weather with long, hot and dry summers from June to September and short but cold winters from December to February. The temperatures in Tashkent can be enormously hot during July and August. At the moment, it is the most cosmopolitan city in Uzbekistan, with big ethnic Russian minority. One example is the "Downtown Tashkent" region, which includes the 22-story NBU Bank building, an Intercontinental Hotel, International Business Center, and the Plaza Building.


In 2007, Tashkent was named the cultural capital of the Islamic world as the city is home to many historic mosques and religious establishments. Uzbekistan has an ethnic Korean populace that was forcibly relocated to the area by Stalin from the Soviet Far East in 1937–1938. There are also small groups of Armenians in Uzbekistan, typically in Tashkent and Samarkand. The U.S. State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report 2004 reports that 0.2% of the population is Buddhist. The Bukharian Jews have lived in Central Asia, typically in Uzbekistan, for thousands of years. Fewer than 5,000 Jews remained in Uzbekistan in 2007. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, considerable migration of ethnic Russians has taken place, mostly for economic reasons.

In the 1940s, the Crimean Tatars, along with the Germans, Chechens, Greeks, Turks, Kurds and a lot of other nationalities were deported to Central Asia. About 100,000 Crimean Tatars go on to living in Uzbekistan. In 1974, there were 35,000 Greeks in Tashkent. Today, 12,000 remain. The greater part of Meskhetian Turks left Uzbekistan after 1989. At least 10% of Uzbekistan’s labor force works overseas. Uzbekistan is home to former racing cyclist Djamolidine Abdoujaparov. Abdoujaparov has won the points contest in the Tour de France three times, each time winning the coveted yellow jersey.
