Tampa Bay is a big natural port along the Gulf of Mexico on the west central shore of Florida, containing Hillsborough Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay.

"Tampa Bay" is not the name of any metropolis within the state of Florida. This delusion possibly stems from the naming of quite a few professional sports franchises whose names correspond to the combined Tampa Bay Area, the hub of which is the city of Tampa, Florida. Tampa Bay is Florida’s biggest open water sea shore, spread out over 1031 square km. and making the coastlines of Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas counties. The freshwater sources of the Bay are distributed between hundreds of small tributaries.

It was recognized as an estuary of national importance by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, for its tassel of mangrove and its inexhaustible mud flats: more than 200 types of fish are to be found in Tampa Bay and 25 kinds of birds make it their home.

Two National Wildlife Refuges are to be found in Tampa Bay: Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge and the refuge on Egmont Key. The majority of the smaller islands in the Bay are out of stock to the public, due to their delicate ecology and their use as nesting sites for brown pelicans, herons, egrets, Roseate spoonbills, cormorants and others. The Tampa Bay Estuary Program keeps watch over the Bay’s health. The Port of Manatee, with more refrigerated quayside space than any other Gulf of Mexico port, is contiguous of the three Tampa Bay deepwater ports to the Panama Canal. It is also one of the state’s busiest, ranking fifth among Florida’s fourteen seaports in total annual cargo tonnage.
