Sylhet is a main city in north-eastern part of Bangladesh. Sylhet city is the capital of Sylhet division and Sylhet district. Sylhet is situated on the banks of the Surma River and is bordered by the Jaintia, Khasi and Tripura mountains. The city has a high populace, with nearly .5 million inhabitants. It is one of the biggest cities of Bangladesh. The Sylhet city is famous for its tea gardens and natural forests. Now days the city is well-known for its business bang and it is one of the richest cities in Bangladesh, having new investments of shopping malls, hotels and luxury housing estates.
Although Sylhet is not a big city as compare to the capital city, it has been developed significantly over the years. The construction industry in Sylhet is recently developing with a lot of shopping centers and apartments being built following luxurious standards. The skyline of the city is largely subjugated by large buildings of shopping centers, which has been the biggest investments made by the expatriates. Sylhet has a populace of around 700,000 inhabitants and has one University, one medical college and one cadet college. It is the city of the Mausaleumm of Hazrat Shahajalal( Rahm ), divisional headquarter and the birth place of Bangobir General Mohammed Ataul Gani Osmani, the commander of the Bangladesh Forces during our liberation war. It has the country’s 3rd biggest airport and Army Cantonment.
An attractive attribute of Sylhet region is the lifestyle of tribal people such as Monipuris, Khasis, Tipperas and Garos who still live in their prehistoric ways in the mountains, following their age-old rituals, rites, traditions and customs. Sylhet is famous for its extensive variety of exquisite handicrafts. Eminent Sylhet cane products are tea trays, flower vases, chair, table, bags and the elegantly designed fine Sital Pati.
