It is also recognized as the diamond capital of the world and the textile capital of India. Ninety two percent of the world’s diamonds are processed here in Surat. Surat is the cleanest city of India after Chandigarh. In the old times it was the biggest city of India but it lost its status to Bombay during the British Raj. Surat was the primary port of India during the Mughal period.
Surat is a port city located on the sides of the Tapti River. The city is situated at the mean elevation of 13 meters. The Surat district is bordered by Bharuch, Narmada to the northern side, Navsari and Dang districts to the Southern side. And to the west is the Gulf of Cambay. The weather is hot and humid and abundance of monsoon precipitation.Surat is financial capital of Gujarat and also one of the economic centers of India. Surat is well known for its textile and diamond industry, as well as for silk and chemicals. It is the core of world’s diamond-polishing industry, Though a large number of polishing is performed on small weight stones, but the diamond industry in Surat is looking for finishing larger, pricier stones in the future.
It has Surat has an automated water distribution system and while computerized drainage system is under completion. It has one of the best water management plants in India. All the parts of Surat have drainage and street lights.
