Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in southern side of Germany. It is the sixth biggest city in Germany. Estimated population of the city is around 600,038 (2008) while the estimated population of the metropolitan area is around 5.3 million (2008). The city is located at the center of a heavily populated area, circled by a ring of smaller towns. This inner metropolitan area called Stuttgart Region has a population of 2.7 million making ‘greater Stuttgart’ the third largest agglomeration in Germany after the Ruhr Area and Berlin. The larger Stuttgart Metropolitan area has a population of over 5 million residents is the fourth largest in Germany after the Rhine-Ruhr area, Berlin/Brandenburg and Frankfurt/Rhine-Main. The city of Stuttgart is stretched across a various mountains, valleys and parks. This type of geography is unusual for a city located in German and occasionally a source of surprise to visitors. The city is also known as the ‘cradle of the automobile’.
The Stuttgart area is famous for its high-tech industry. Some of the most well-known companies are Daimler AG, Porsche, Bosch, Celesio, Hewlett-Packard and IBM. All of these companies have their world or German headquarters here in the city. Stuttgart is the ninth largest exhibition center in Germany. Stuttgart Trade Fair which takes place in the city outskirts next to Stuttgart Airport. Stuttgart has the highest standard of affluence of any city in Germany. Contact Air, a regional airline and Lufthansa subsidiary has their headquarters in the city.
Stuttgart is located about an hour from the Black Forest and a similar distance from the Swabian Jura. The city center is located in a lush valley, lying between vineyards and thick woodland near by but not on the River Neckar. Consequently the city is also known as the lying "zwischen Wald und Reben", between forest and vines.
