Strasbourg is the capital and a major city of the Alsace area in north-eastern France. Situated near the border with Germany, it is the capital of the Bas-Rhin department. Estimated population of the city is around 272,975 (2006) and estimated population of its urban community is around 467,375 inhabitants. Strasbourg’s metropolitan area is the ninth biggest area in France. The transnational Eurodistrict Strasbourg-Ortenau has a population of 884,988 inhabitants.

Strasbourg is the administrative center of European institutions like Council of Europe, Eurocorps, European Parliament and the European Ombudsman of the European Union. Strasbourg is a vital center of manufacturing and engineering, as well as of road, rail, and river communications. The port of Strasbourg is the second biggest on the Rhine after Duisburg, Germany. The city is the administrative center for the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine.

The historical city center, the Grande Île ("Grand Island"), was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988, it was the first such honor given to an entire city center. Strasbourg contains a Franco-German culture, and although viciously disputed all through the history and has been a bridge of unity between France and Germany for centuries, especially through the University of Strasbourg, currently the biggest in France, and the co-existence of Catholic and Protestant culture.

Strasbourg is largest on the Ill River, where it flows into the Rhine on the boundary with Germany, from the German town of Kehl. The city is located in the Upper Rhine Plain, approximately 20 km eastern side of the Vosges Mountains and 25 km (16 mi) western side of the Black Forest. Winds coming from either direction being often deflected by these natural barriers, the median annual rainfall is low and the perceived summer temperatures can be inordinately high.
