Sheffield is a city and metropolitan region of South Yorkshire, England. Its name came from the River Sheaf, which flows down the city. In the past it was a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city has developed from its industrial foundation to cover a broader economic base. The estimated population of the City of Sheffield is 534,500, but the Urban Areas of the city had a population of 640,720 in 2001. Sheffield is one of the eight biggest regional English cities that make up the English Core Cities Group. During the previous century, Sheffield gained a reputation for its steel production. A lot of innovations were manufactured locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield was declared a municipal city in 1893, when it formally became the City of Sheffield.

Sheffield is situated at 53°23′N 1°28′W / 53.383°N 1.467°W / . It is located directly along Rotherham, from which it is divided in to two parts by the M1 motorway. Although Barnsley Metropolitan area also borders Sheffield to the northern side, the town itself is a few miles further away. The southern and western borderlines of the city are shared with Derbyshire; in the initial periods of the 20th century Sheffield broadened its borders south into Derbyshire, absorbing a number of villages, such as Totley, Dore and the area now called Mosborough Townships. Directly to the western side of the city is the Peak District National Park and the Pennine mountain range.

Sheffield has a very broad variety of habitat, comparing favorably with any city in the United Kingdom: metropolitan, parkland and woodland, agricultural and arable land, moors and meadows. There are six regions within the city that are designated as sites of special scientific interest.
