Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Located in the northern side of UK, it borders England from the southern side and is surrounded by the North Sea to the eastern side, the Atlantic Ocean to the northern and western side, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwestern side. Apart from its mainland, Scotland contains over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides. Edinburgh city is the capital of Scotland and it is the second biggest city of Scotland. This city is Europe’s biggest economic center. Edinburgh city was the central hub of Scottish Enlightenment revolution of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. The largest city of Scotland is Glasgow which was once one of the world’s leading industrial cities and now located in the center of Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. The waters around Scotland contain large portions of the North Atlantic and the North Sea. These contain the biggest oil reserves in the European Union. Due to which the third biggest city of Scotland (Aberdeen) has been given the title of Europe’s oil capital.
Before 1707, the Kingdom of Scotland was a sovereign state when it entered into a political union with the Kingdom of England to make the United Kingdom of Great Britain. But still the legal system of Scotland if separate from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland; and constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and in private law.
It continued its legal, educational and religious institutions distinction from the rest of UK to maintain its own cultural and national identity. Although Scotland is no longer a separate independent state, issues surrounding devolution and independence continue to be debated.
