Saudi Arabia is situated on the Arabia Peninsula and consists of around 80% of it. It is bordered by the Red Sea to the western, Egypt and Jordan to the northeastern, Iraq and Kuwait to the northern, the Persian Gulf, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the eastern, Oman to the southeastern and south as well as Yemen to the southern and southwestern sides. The country is divided into four geographical regions, The Red Sea escarpment, from Hejaz in the north to Asir in the south. The central plateau which extends to the Tuwaiq Mountains and further, The sand deserts of Dahana and Nafud, The Rub al-Khali Desert, which is the largest sand desert in world. Saudi Arabia capital is Riyadh.


Saudi Arabia has a hot and dry climate with chill and freezing temperatures in winter while the Red Sea shore experiences high humidity and temperatures. Precipitation is sparse with an average annual precipitation of approximately 100 mm. The prevailing winds are severe dust storms such as the southerly Kauf and the northwesterly Shamal. Average temperature ranges in Riyadh are from 8 to 21 degrees Celsius in January to 26 to 42 degrees Celsius in July.

The official religion is Islam with 85% of the population Sunni Muslims while 14% are Shiite Muslims. Christians account for less than 1% of the population and are the largest religious minority. The official language is Arabic, although English is also widely understood.

Makkah and Madinah, Islam’s two holiest cities, are situated in Saudi Arabia. Makkah is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and the central point of Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage in which approximately two million Muslims from all parts of the world take part every year. Madinah is the city where Prophet Muhammad move abroad and lived. Riyadh, situated in the central province, is the capital city of Saudi Arabia. It is also the high-tech center of modern Saudi Arabia and houses the headquarters of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Jeddah, situated along the eastern coast of the Red Sea, is the commercial capital of Saudi Arabia, and serves as an entrance to the rest of the peninsula. Jeddah’s ports hence become the main thoroughfares for trade. The twin cities of Jubail and Yanbu are a symbol of the government’s vision of Saudi Arabia’s future development. Jubail lies on the Arabian Gulf in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom. It is situated 80 kilometers north of Dammam, and is an ancient center and caravan junction famous for pearling. It has the world’s largest petrochemical complex. Yanbu is located on the East Coast of the Red Sea about 350 kilometers north-west of Jeddah. It houses the Directorate General of the Royal Commission for Jubail & Yanbu. It is a typical industrial fortress and a work of art in architectural engineering.
