San is a main town and capital of the Cercle of San in the Segou area of Mali. The estimated population of the city was around 26,744 in 1998. The city is located in the middle of Mali, the total area of the city is about 64 947 km² (around 5% of Mali). The region is surrounded by Sikasso Region on the south, Tombouctou and Mopti on the east, Burkina Faso to the southeast and Koulikoro to the west. The Segou area is characterized as semi-arid climate with median rain fall of around 513 mm and irrigated by two vital waterways: the Niger and the Bani River, allowing irrigation for agriculture. The city has two seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season starts in June and lasts about four months until September. The dry season includes a cold period and a period of heat. The median annual precipitation is about 513 mm. The city has dominant wind in the dry season and it blows from north to south. The monsoon blowing from south to north-west is more frequent during rainy season.

Now days the economy of the city is dependent on the pottery, market and fishing industry. Main attractions in the old town of Segou-Koro included a mosque, Coulibaly’s tomb and an ancient tree. In the city center, the major landmark is the water tower.

Major economic activities of the Segou area are agri-business, cattle farming and fishing. The Segou people apply necessary traditional farming methods. Segou produces the main part of Mali’s national food comprising of sedentary cattle farming. The economy is basically informal as it is oriented towards the populations’ basic requirements, while industrial production is weak and based in the food industry. Large scale agribusiness contains three factories, COMATEX, CMDT and SUKALA. Commerce consists mainly of the small scale exchange and sale by of products from the primary sector, sold weekly at the large Segou market, drawing customers from far outside of the city.
