San Jose is the third biggest city in California and the tenth biggest in the United States. The city is located in the southern edge of the San Francisco Bay region, an area commonly known as Silicon Valley. San Jose has attracted a number of newcomers in new housing developments and presently is the most populous city in the United States north of Los Angeles and west of Chicago. The estimated population of the city is around 1,006,892. The main urban area contains approximately 7.4 million inhabitants. It is one of the main cities of the San Francisco Bay Area, and the biggest in population, land area, and industrial development.
It contains a lot of high-technology engineering industry, computer, and microprocessor companies, which led the area to be known as Silicon Valley. As the biggest city in the valley, San Jose is called the capital of Silicon Valley. It is home to several Universities like the University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Santa Cruz, San José State University, San Francisco State University, California State University, East Bay, Santa Clara University, and Stanford University. These Universities induct thousands of engineering and computer science graduates into the local economy every year.
San Jose is located near the San Andreas Fault, a main source of earthquake activity in California. The most serious earthquake, in 1906, damaged thousands of buildings in San Jose. Previous major quakes rocked the city were in 1839, 1851, 1858, 1864, 1865, 1868, and 1891. The Daly City Earthquake of 1957 caused some harm. The Loma Prieta tremor of 1989 also did some dent to parts of the city. The other faults near San Jose are the Monte Vista Fault, South Hayward Fault, Northern Calaveras Fault, and Central Calaveras Fault.
