This city is also the administrative center of San Diego County. It is also a main economic center of the San Diego–Carlsbad–San Marcos Metropolitan Area, which is considered to be congruent with the county. San Diego is also the biggest city of Southern Border and it is the area’s western anchor.

The city of San Diego ranks as the fifth wealthiest in the United States. San Diego’s biggest industries are manufacturing, military, and tourism. San Diego’s economy is mainly dependent on agriculture, biotechnology/biosciences, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, defense-related manufacturing, financial and business services, ship-repair, ship-construction, software development, telecommunications, wireless research, and tourism. The University of California, San Diego and the affiliated Medical Center is contributing a lot in the research of biotechnology. The three main sectors of San Diego’s economy are defense, manufacturing, and tourism. By the last decade of 19th century a number of corporate headquarters had left San Diego. But still there are a lot of companies doing business in this city.

There are San Diego companies that develop wireless cellular technology. Qualcomm Incorporated has there headquartered in San Diego; Qualcomm is the biggest private-sector technology employer in San Diego County. San Diego is also home to more than 400 biotechnology companies. The port of San Diego has a significant role in the overall growth of this city. It contains a number of submarine and shipbuilding yards on the West Coast, as well as the biggest naval fleet in the world.
