San Antonio is the second biggest city in the state of Texas and the seventh-biggest city in the United States with a population of 1.3 million. The city is the administrative center of Bexar County. The city lies in the American Southwest and the northern portion of South Texas, San Antonio is the home of Tejano culture and Texas tourism. It was the fourth fastest developing big city in the nation from 2000 to 2006 and the fifth fastest developing from 2007 to 2008. The population of the metropolitan areas of the city is around 2 million, making it the 28th biggest urban area in the United States and third in Texas.
San Antonio has a strong military existence, and is home to Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley outside the city. It is also home to five Fortune 500 companies and to the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region. The city is situated near 29.5°N 98.5°W. It has the total area of 412.07 square miles from which 407.56 square miles of land and 4.51 square miles of water. The city is located on the Balcones Escarpment. The city of San Antonio is at 772 ft above sea level.
The main source of drinking water for the city is the Edwards Aquifer. Which was developed in 1969, the two lakes Victor Braunig Lake and Calaveras Lake were among the first reservoirs in the country developed to process wastewater for power plant cooling, reducing the amount of groundwater required for electrical generation. San Antonio has a multi-faced economy with four major focuses: economic services, government, health care, and tourism. The South Texas Medical Center is located in the northwest of the city center, which is a joint venture of various hospitals, clinics, and research and higher educational institutions.
