Saint-Etienne is a city in eastern central part of France. It is located 60 km (40 miles) southwestern side of Lyon in the Rhone-Alpes area and is the capital of the Loire department. It is located in the Massif Central. Estimated population of the city is around 177,300 (2004). Estimated population of the whole metropolitan area is around 321,703 (1999). The residents of the city are called stephanois in French. They are named so because "Etienne" derives from the Greek Stephanos.
The city’s football club AS Saint-Etienne has won the Ligue 1 title a record ten times. St. Etienne was the major center of French bicycle industry. The bicycle wheel manufacturer Mavic is based in the city and frame manufacturers Motobecane and Vitus are also based here. The city also host a stage of the Tour de France. St. Etienne resident Thierry Gueorgiou is a world champion in orienteering.
The closest airport in the city is Saint-Etienne – Boutheon Airport which is situated in Andrezieux-Boutheon, 12 km north-northwestern side of Saint-Etienne. Saint-Etienne is also known for its Tramway de Saint Etienne tram system. Bus and tram transport is regulated and provided by the STAS, a public transport executive organization. A bicycle sharing system with 280 bicycles will be available in June 2010, provided by Smoove.
The main educational institutions are Jean Monnet University, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne (EMSE or ENSMSE), Ecole nationale dingenieurs de Saint-Etienne (ENISE), Institute superieur des techniques avancees de Saint-Etienne (ISTASE) and Saint-Etienne School of Management.
The city was given name in honor of Saint Stephen. During the sixteenth century, Saint-Etienne developed its manufacturing industry. It was this which accounted for the town’s importance, although it also became a centre for the manufacture of ribbons and passementerie starting in the 17th century.
