Safi is a city located in the western Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the Doukkala-Abda area, the estimated population of the city was around 284,750 (2004 census), but is also the center of an agglomeration which has an estimated 793,000 residents (1987). Safi is the major fishing port for the country’s sardine industry, and also exports phosphates, textiles and ceramics. During the Second World War, Safi was one of the landing sites for Operation Torch. Safi, under the name Safim, was under Portuguese rule between 1488 and 1541.

Safi’s patron saint is Abu Mohammed Salih. The total area of the city is around 13,285 km² and the estimated population of the city was around 1,984,039 (2004 census).The metropolitan area of the city is made up of following provinces like El Jadida Province and Safi Province.

It is the presently the highest administrative division of Morocco. The area is subdivided into a total of 61 second-order administrative divisions, which are prefectures and provinces. A Moroccan region is governed by a Wali, nominated by the King. The Wali is also governor of the province (or prefecture) where he resides. Three regions are Guelmim-Es Semara, Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra, and Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira. It is located near the disputed territory in Western Sahara, whose sovereignty is disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front which claims the territory as the independent Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, but presently controls regions east of the Moroccan Wall.
