Sacramento is the capital of the U.S. state of California, and the county seat of Sacramento region. It is situated along the Sacramento River and just south of the American River’s confluence in California’s extensive Central Valley. It is the seventh biggest city in California. Sacramento is the financial center of the Sacramento urban region which includes El Dorado, Placer and Sacramento. Sacramento became a city because of the efforts of John Sutter, a Swiss migrant and James W. Marshall. California State University, Sacramento is commonly known as Sacramento State or Sac State, is the main local university. It is one of the twenty-three campuses of the California State University structure. Additionally, the University of California, Davis is situated in close by Davis, 15 miles west of the capital. The UC Davis Medical Center, a world famous research hospital, is located in the city of Sacramento.

The city is situated at the convergence of the Sacramento River and the American River, and has a deep port linked to the San Francisco Bay by a canal through the Sacramento River Delta. It is the shipping and rail center for the Sacramento Valley, fruit, vegetables, rice, wheat, dairy goods, and beef. Sacramento has a moderate weather that is differentiated by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The “wet season” is normally October through April, though rain does occasionally fall in June or September. The average yearly temperature is 61 °F, with daily average ranging from 46 °F in December and January to 76 °F in July. Even on the coldest winter days, temperatures normally rise over 40 °F and always over freezing. Summer heat waves often bring high temperatures, consecutive days with temperatures above 100 °F occur almost every summer but the summer heat is often normalized by a sea breeze known as the “Delta Breeze” which comes through the Sacramento/San Joaquin delta from the San Francisco Bay.
