Riobamba is the capital city of the Chimborazo Province in the central part of Ecuador, which is situated at the Chambo River Valley of the Andes. It is located 200 km (125 miles) southern side of Ecuador’s capital Quito and situated at 9,000 feet (2,700 m) on the Avenue of the Volcanoes. The city is a vital regional transport center as well as being a stop on the Pan-American Highway that goes through Ecuador. Along with Ambato, Riobamba stands as one of the biggest cities in the central part of Ecuador’s Sierra area.
The city is situated in the central part of the country in the sierra area, within close proximity to the Chimborazo volcano. Like other main cities of the country it has a near constant temperature year-round, with a wet and dry season. It is located at the altitude of 2754 meters above the sea level. The city is near the Chimborazo which gives it a cool climate year-round, with temperatures averaging between 23 °C and 14 °C. The economy of the city is dependent on agricultural production of the localities around. Besides this, the city has an open-air market where indigenous artisans display their wares, where people can find manufactured products as textiles, handicrafts, leather goods, beer, and dairy products. Riobamba is also an important trade center of cattle-ranching.
The main Universities of the city include Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, Escuela Superior Politecnica de Chimborazo and Instituto Tecnologico superior Isabel de godin. It is a mid-level city in Ecuador, and the 10th biggest in terms of population. It is the urban center of the Riobamaba canton, with a historic center that has a number of well-preserved churches. The main celebration of the city is Fiesta del Niño Rey de Reyes, which starts in December and ends on January 6. It has several colorful parades and music during the festivities. Another celebration is Riobamba’s Independence Day on 21st of April.
