Recife is the 5th biggest urban area in Brazil with a population of around 3,768,902 inhabitants, the biggest municipal area of the North and Northeastern area of Brazil. It is the 4th biggest urban influence area in Brazil, and the capital of the state of Pernambuco. Recife is situated where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a main port on the Atlantic Ocean. The meaning of the name Recife is "reef" in Portuguese, in reference to the coral reefs that are there on the city’s shores. A lot of rivers, number of small islands and about 50 bridges are there in the Recife city center characterize its geography and gives it the moniker of the "Brazilian Venice."

The urban area of Recife is the major industrial zone of the State of Pernambuco; a lot of products coming from this city are derived from cane (sugar and ethanol), electronics, food, and others. A number of industrial enterprises were started in the 1970s and 1980s. Recife is the most significant financial center of the North/Northeastern area of Brazil with more than 52,500 business enterprises in Recife itself plus 32,500 in the Metro Area which will total more than 85,000.

The city is also a famous educational center, and home to the Federal University of Pernambuco, the biggest university in Pernambuco. Number of Brazilian historical figures, like the poet and abolitionist Castro Alves, moved to Recife to complete their education. Recife has a large airport called Gilberto Freyre/Guararapes International Airport which links Recife to number of Brazilian destinations as well as main international cities in Europe, the United States and South America. Recife is one of Brazil’s main financial centers due to the International Airport and two International ports.
