Raleigh is the capital city of the state of North Carolina, the seat of Wake region and the second biggest city in North Carolina behind Charlotte. Raleigh is known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees. The city’s estimated population is 392,552, making Raleigh the 8th fastest developing city and the 45th biggest metropolitan in the United States. Most of Raleigh is situated within Wake region, with a very small section stretching into Durham region. The suburbs of Cary, Garner, Wake Forest, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Wendell, and Ruleville are some of Raleigh’s major close by towns. Raleigh occupies a total area of 115.6 square miles, of which 114.6 square miles is dry land and 1.0 square miles is covered by water.


Raleigh is situated in the northeast central area of North Carolina, where the North American Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain areas meet. This area is known as the “fall line” because it marks the altitude of the land at which waterfalls start to appear in creeks and rivers. Its central Piedmont site situates Raleigh around three hours west of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, by car and four hours east of the Great hills of the Appalachian range. The city is 145 miles southern side of Richmond, Virginia; 232 miles south of Washington, D.C.; and 143 miles northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Raleigh enjoys a moist climate, with usually reasonable temperatures during spring and autumn. Summers are normally warm to hot. Winters are cool to cold and wet with highs usually in the range of upper 40s to low 50s°F with lows in the mid 20s to low 30s°F, though an irregular 60°F or warmer winter day is not rare. Infrequent single digit temperatures can be seen in any given winter. Spring and autumn days regularly reach the low/mid 70s°F, with lows at night in the lower 50s°F. Summer daytime highs frequently approach mid to upper 80s to low 90s°F with cooler nights between 65°F to 70°F. The area’s rainiest months are January and March with the driest months being April and November. Raleigh’s industries include electrical, medical, electronic and telecommunications equipment; clothing and apparel; food processing; paper products; and pharmaceuticals.
