Porto Alegre is the eleventh most heavily populated metropolitan city in Brazil and the capital city of the southern most Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Porto Alegre is one of the most significant political, cultural and economic centers of Brazil. Two countries, Argentina and Uruguay surrounds Rio Grande do Sul. It is also the center of Brazil’s fourth biggest urban area. Porto Alegre was established in 1742 by migrants from the Azores, Portugal. In the late 19th century the city received a lot of migrants from other sections of the world, predominantly Germany, Italy, and Poland. The majority of the inhabitants are of European descent.
The city is located on the eastern side of Rio Guaiba (Guaiba Lake), where five rivers meet to form the Lagoa dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon crossable by even the biggest of ships. This five-river convergence point has become a significant alluvial port as well as main industrial and financial center of Brazil. The port of Porto Alegre is vital for the transportation of local production. The “Gaucho capital” has a settled economy that has a special focus on agriculture and industry. Agricultural production of the city includes plums, peaches, rice and cassava. The shoe and leather industries are also significant, particularly in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre.
Porto Alegre has a long shoreline on the Guaíba Lake, and its landscape is surrounded by 40 mountains. In the lake large islands facing the city generates an archipelago where the ecosystem produces rich wildlife. The city area contains 28% of the native plant life of Rio Grande do Sul, with 9,288 species. Among these, there are number of trees which are the remainder of the Atlantic Forest. Fauna are also diversified, particularly in the islands and mountains. The Port Alegre environs include number of parks, squares and wooded streets.
