Portland is a city situated in the Northwestern side of United States, close to the convergence point of the Willamette and Columbia rivers in the state of Oregon. The estimated population of the city is around 582,130 making it the 29th most populous in the United States. The city is known as the most environmentally friendly or "green" city in the United States, and the 2nd most in the world. Portland is Oregon’s most densely inhabited city, and the third most heavily populated city in the Pacific Northwest, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. About two million people live in the Portland metropolitan area (MSA), the 23rd most crowded in the United States.

Portland’ city is home of number of industries due to its prime location. The economic advantages of the city include low energy cost, accessible resources, international air terminals, large marine shipping facilities, and both west coast intercontinental railroads. It is ranked 42nd worldwide in quality of living, recreation, banking facilities, availability of consumer goods, political stability, personal freedom, sanitation, crime, housing, the natural environment, education, and public services including transportation. Portland is located in the Marine west coast climate area, marked by warm, dry summers and rainy but moderate winters. This weather is ideal for growing roses, and for more than a century, Portland also very famous for its roses and referred as The City of Roses with many rose gardens, most outstandingly the International Rose Test Garden.

Portland is located at the northern end of Oregon’s most inhabited area, the Willamette Valley. As a metropolitan region is culturally and politically different from the rest of the valley, local people often excludes Portland from the valley proper. Although almost all of Portland is located within Multnomah County, a small portion of the city is located within Clackamas and Washington counties.
