Pennsylvania often referred to as PA by natives and North-easterners, is a state situated in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic areas of the United States. The state has boundaries with Delaware and Maryland to the southern side, West Virginia to the southwestern side, Ohio to the western side, New York and a water border with Ontario to the northern side, and New Jersey to the eastern side. The state’s four most heavily populated cities are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie. The state capital is Harrisburg.
Pennsylvania has been recognized as the Keystone State since 1802, based in part upon its middle position amongst the original Thirteen Colonies forming the United States, and also in part because of the numerous significant American documents signed in the state. It was also a keystone state economically, having both the industry common to the North and the agriculture common to the South.
Pennsylvania has 51 miles of coast along Lake Erie and 57 miles of beach all along the Delaware Estuary. Pennsylvania is 170 miles north to south and 283 miles east to west. Of a total 46,055 square miles, 44,817 square miles are land, 490 square miles are inland waters and 749 square miles are waters in Lake Erie. It is the 33rd biggest state in the United States. The boundaries of the state are the Mason-Dixon Line to the southern side, the Delaware River to the eastern side, 80° 31′ W to the western side, and the 42° N to the northern side, with the exception of a short section on the western end, where a triangle extends north to Lake Erie. Pennsylvania boundaries six other states: New York to the northern side; New Jersey to the eastern side; Delaware and Maryland to the southeastern side; West Virginia to the southwestern side, and Ohio to the western side. Pennsylvania also shares a water border with Canada.
