Patna is the capital of the Indian state of Bihar. The city of Patna is located near the southern bank of the Ganges. The city also straddles the rivers Kosi, Sone and Gandak and Punpun. The dimensions of Patna is approximately 25 km long and 9 km to 10 km. Patna is the 14th most heavily populated city in India with about 1.8 million and 168th in the world. It is the second biggest city in eastern India, after Kolkata. Today, all main companies have there offices in Patna representing its growing significance. The city is an administrative centre of the state and it also has some historic significance, the city is also a main educational and medical centre. Patna is the 21st-fastest developing city and metropolitan area in the world and the 5th-fastest emergent city in India. In June 2009, The World Bank ranked Patna as the second-best city in India to start a business, after Delhi.

Patna is one of the oldest constantly colonized places in the world. Patna was anciently known as Pataliputra, Under the Haryanka, Nanda, Mauryan, Sunga, Gupta, Pala and Suri dynasties it was the capital of the Magadha Empire. Pataliputra was also a renowned place for learning and fine arts. Its population was about 400,000 during the Maurya period. The wall surrounded old area is referred as Patna City by the locals, and it is a main trading centre. The sacred places for Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain pilgrim centres of Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda, Bodhgaya, and Pawapuri are near close to Patna and it is also a sacred city for Sikhs. The Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, was born here.
