Orapa is a town situated in the Central District of Botswana. The city contains Orapa diamond mine, one of the biggest diamond mines in the world, and the city is known as the diamond capital of the country. The city Orapa has four schools, one of which has English as a medium of teaching, serving a community containing a high proportion of expatriates. The estimated population of the city was about 10,000 in 1996 but has increased rapidly in last 10 years and is still increasing, due to the mining output having increased in line with development targets.
The city is serviced by the Orapa Airport which holds flights to Gaborone, Johannesburg and other vital destinations. A gliding club lies at the airport. An animal conservation area (Game Park) is also located within the border of the town. The town actually is bounded by fence to guard the diamond industry but still it is open for the locals to reside here as a safe and prosperous environment in which to live. This is the only city in the country which has a 24-hour protection. It is fenced, with an eastern and a western gate, to prevent unauthorized entry to the town. It has made it a small town of the city as houses are constructed and arranged according to classes.
The city is the diamond capital of the country. Diamonds were first discovered in 1967, only a year after Botswana’s Independence. The mine was constructed in 1971, and the commercial production began. Because of the discovery of diamonds, Botswana has not only the strongest African currency but is also one of the wealthiest and most stable countries in Africa. The diamond mine of the city doubled its production capacity in 2000, and it is now the biggest single diamond mining projects to be undertaken anywhere in the world.
