Ohio is a Midwestern state of the United States. The 34th largest state by area in the U.S., it is the 7th-most populous with almost 11.5 million inhabitants. The capital of Ohio is Columbus. Ohio, whose name was derivative of the Seneca word ohi:yo’, meaning "large creek," was formed mainly from the Ohio region and was admitted to the Union as the 17th state on March 1, 1803. Ohio is also called the "Buckeye State" for its pervasiveness of Ohio buckeye trees, and, as such, Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."

The government of Ohio is consist of the executive branch, headed by the Governor; the legislative branch, which include the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is headed by the Supreme Court. Currently, Ohio occupies 18 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is famous for its standing as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections.

By population density, Ohio is ranked ninth among all U.S. states. However, Ohio at present suffers from a negative net population migration, and a rising rate of unemployment.

Ohio’s geographic position has established to be a positive feature for financial development and expansion. Because Ohio links the Northeast to the Midwest, much cargo and trade traffic passes through its borders all along its well-built highways. To the Northern side, Lake Erie gives Ohio 312 miles (502 km) of shoreline, which allows for numerous seaports. Ohio’s southern border is defined by the Ohio River, and much of the northern border is defined by Lake Erie. Ohio’s neighbors are Pennsylvania to the eastern side, Michigan to the northwestern side, Ontario Canada, to the northern side, Indiana to the western side, Kentucky on the southern side and West Virginia on the southeastern side.
