North Dakota is a state situated in the Midwestern area of the United States of America; on the Canadian boundary halfway between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. North Dakota is the 19th biggest state by area in the U.S.; it is the 3rd slightest populous, with just over 641,481 inhabitants. The Missouri River flows throughout the western section of the state and forms Lake Sakakawea behind the Garrison Dam. The western half of the state is mountainous and contains lignite coal and oil. In the eastern side, the Red River forms the Red River Valley, containing rich farmland. Agriculture has long dominated the economy and culture of North Dakota. The state capital is Bismarck and the biggest city is Fargo. The main public universities are positioned in Grand Forks and Fargo. The United States Air Force operates bases at both Minot and Grand Forks.
The western half of the state consists of the mountainous vast Plains, and the northern section of the Badlands to the western side of the Missouri River. The state’s elevated area, White Butte at 3,506 feet, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park are situated in the Badlands. The area is rich in fossil fuels including crude oil and lignite coal. The Missouri River forms Lake Sakakawea, the third biggest man-made lake in the United States, behind the Garrison Dam.
The central area of the state is divided into the Drift Prairie and the Missouri Plateau. This region is covered in lakes, slough, and rolling hills. The Turtle hills are situated all along the Manitoba boundary. The geographic hub of the North American continent is situated near the city of Rugby.
Agriculture is the biggest industry in North Dakota, though petroleum and food processing are also main industries. The economy of North Dakota had a gross domestic product of $24 billion in 2005. The per capita income in 2006 was $33,034, ranked 29th in the nation. The three-year mean household earning from was $39,594, ranking 37 in the U.S. North Dakota is also the only state with a state owned bank, the Bank of North Dakota in Bismarck, and a state owned flour mill, the North Dakota Mill and Elevator in Grand Forks.
