New York is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern areas of the United States and is the nation’s third most crowded. The state is surrounded by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the southern side, and Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the eastern side. The state has a boundary with Rhode isle east of Long Island, as well as an international boundary with the Canadian provinces of Ontario to the western side, and Quebec to the northern side. New York is frequently referred as New York State to differentiate it from New York City. New York City, which is geographically the biggest city in the state and most heavily populated in the United States, is recognized for its history as a gateway for migration to the United States and its status as a economic, cultural, transportation, and industrialized center.

New York was occupied by the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Len ape Native American grouping at the time Dutch and French nationals moved into the area in the early 17th century. In 1609, the region came to have Dutch forts at Fort Orange, close to the site of the present day capital of Albany in 1614, and was occupied by the Dutch in 1624 at both Albany and Manhattan; it later fell to British seizure in 1664. The boundaries of the British colony, the Province of New York, were approximately comparable to those of the current state. New York covers 54,556 square miles and ranks as the 27th biggest state by size. The vast Appalachian Valley covers eastern New York, while Lake Champlain is the major northern feature of the valley, which also contains the Hudson River running southward to the Atlantic Ocean. The rocky Adirondack hills, with vast tracts of rough country, located west of the valley. Most of the southern section of the state is on the Allegheny highland, which rises from the southeastern side to the Catskill hills. The western portion of the state is irrigated by the Allegheny River and rivers of the Susquehanna and Delaware systems. Contrasting with New York City’s urban atmosphere, the vast majority of the state is dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes. New York’s Adirondack Park is the largest state park in the United States.
