Nebraska is a state situated on the huge Plains of the Midwestern United States. The state’s capital is Lincoln and its biggest city is Omaha. Nebraska most likely gets its name from the archaic Otoe words Ñí Brásge, or the Omaha Ní Btháska, meaning "flat water," following the Platte River that flows through the state. American Indian tribes in Nebraska have included the Omahas, Missouria, Poncas, Pawnees, Otoes, and a variety of branches of the Sioux.

In the early ages part of the Great American Desert, it is now a leading farming and ranching state. The state is surrounded by South Dakota to the northern side; Iowa to the eastern side and Missouri to the southeastern side, across the Missouri River; Kansas to the southern side; Colorado to the southwestern side; and Wyoming to the western side. The state has 93 cities; it occupies the central portion of the Frontier Strip. Nebraska is divided into two time zones. The Central Time zone consists of the eastern half of the state, while the western half observes hill Time. Three rivers cross the state from west to east. The Platte River flows through the center, the Niobrara River flows through the northern section of the state’s area, and the Republican River flows through the southern section of the state.

Nebraska consists of two major land regions: the Dissected Till Plains and the Great Plains. The easternmost part of the state was occupied by Ice Age glaciers; the divided Till Plains were left behind after the glaciers vanished. The Dissected Till Plains is a part of gently rolling hills; Omaha and Lincoln are situated within this area. The Great Plains occupy the mass of western Nebraska. The Great Plains itself contains quite a few smaller, diverse land areas, including the Sand hills, the Pine Ridge, the Rainwater Basin, the High Plains and the Wildcat Hills. Panorama Point, at 5,424 feet (1,653 m), is the uppermost point in Nebraska; in spite of its name and altitude, it is simply a low rise near the Colorado and Wyoming boundaries.
