Nakuru is the provincial capital of Kenya’s Rift Valley province. The estimated population of the city was around 300,000 inhabitants and currently the fourth biggest urban center in the country, located around 1850 m above sea level. It is also the administrative center for Nakuru District. The economy of the city is dependent on agriculture; manufacturing and tourism. The region and its surrounding towns are known for its vast agricultural potential with several small farms and also vast agricultural enterprises. Major crops grown around Nakuru and marketed in the town include coffee, wheat, barley, maize, and beans. These crops are stored in huge silos at the border of the town by the National Cereals and Produce Board and Lesiolo Grain Handlers Limited. The crops offer the primary raw material for the manufacturing industries found in Nakuru and Nairobi.
These industries comprise flour milling and grain ginneries. Dairy farming is a major economic activity and provides the inputs for number milk processing plants around the town. The town is also major market for various retail businesses that offer goods and services to the manufacturing and agricultural sectors. A large public market located on the western side of the town on the main through fare to the capital, Nairobi.
The city is also a main educational center for people in and around the city. It contains Egerton University, a large public university, and Kabarak University, a private university associated with former President Moi’s business and religious interests. The Rift Valley Institute of Technology is also situated in the city, as is the Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI). The Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) has a college branch in Nakuru. The city is now transforming itself as a major academic center for the country. Tourism is a main important economic activity in the city.
