Nagpur is a city in the state of Maharashtra, and is the biggest city in central India and also the third biggest city by population in the state of Maharashtra, with a populace of about 2.42 million; Nagpur UA is the 13th biggest metropolitan city in India, the 114th biggest city in world, and the 143rd biggest metropolitan area in world in terms of populace. This city also holds the annual winter session of Maharashtra State Assembly. Nagpur is a main political and commercial center of the Vidarbha area of Maharashtra. It city is also known as “Orange City” due to its mass production of oranges. The city is politically significant for its Hindu nationalist organization called RSS and also a vital location for the Dalit Buddhist movement.

Nagpur is located at the geographical center of India. The city was established by the Gond people and later became a section of Maratha Empire. The British East India Company conquered and made it the capital city of Central Provinces and Berar. Nagpur city is located at the Deccan plateau of the Indian Peninsula and has an average altitude of 310 meters above sea level. The underground rock structure is covered with alluvial deposits which are produced due to the floods from the Kanhan River and in some areas structures produced granular sandy soil.

The low lying sections of the city are poorly drained, and the soil is alluvial clay with poor fertility attributes. Schist, gneiss and granites are found in the form of crystalline metamorphic rocks in the eastern side of the city. While clays of the lower Gondwana formations and yellowish sand stones are found in the Northern part of the city. Nagpur is famous for its greenery, and was judged as the cleanest and second greenest in India after Bangalore.
