Montreal is the second-biggest city in Canada and the biggest city in the province of Quebec. Basically known as Ville-Marie, or “City of Mary”, the city takes its current name from Mont-Royal, the triple-peaked hill situated in the core of the city, whose name was also given to the island on which the city is situated, or Mont Real as it was spelled in Middle French. The total population of the city is around 1,620,698 according to the 2006 census, making it as the sixth biggest city across Canada and the United States. French language is spoken by 57% of the population, followed by English at 19%. The official language of Montreal is French as defined by the city’s charter. Montreal is the second biggest French-speaking city in the world, after Paris. Although some of the francophone African cities are larger in size, such as Algiers, Kinshasa, and Abidjan, it is true that these cities don’t have significant number of mother-tongue French speakers.

Montreal is constantly recognized as one of the world’s most livable cities in the world and is generally known as “Canada’s Cultural Capital” by Monocle Magazine. It was historically the commercial capital of Canada but surpassed in population by Toronto in 1976. Now it is regarded as a significant center of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, culture, tourism, film and world affairs. This city is North America’s number one host city for international association events, according to the 2009 preliminary rankings of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
